ISTANBUL: Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura, underscored the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a strategic tool to support development and keep pace with rapid global transformations.
Speaking at the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, he noted that parliamentary engagement plays a vital role in enhancing cooperation between legislatures and exchanging expertise to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Al Maawali said the current global landscape requires unified policies that promote peace and stability, particularly amid accelerating technological and economic challenges that could reshape work patterns and widen social disparities.
He highlighted that the world is passing through a sensitive phase that could mark a turning point in the international system, especially in the Middle East, where escalating conflicts threaten global peace and security. He stressed the need for the international community to uphold justice and ensure stability.
Reaffirming Oman’s position, Al Maawali said the Sultanate of Oman supports the right of nations to self-defence in accordance with international law, while maintaining that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective means to resolve conflicts.
He also urged the global community not to overlook the Palestinian issue, describing ongoing violations as a breach of humanitarian values and calling for collective responsibility to end violence and achieve a just and lasting peace.
He emphasised that implementing the principles of the United Nations Charter requires strong political will, multilateral cooperation, and partnerships among governments, institutions, and civil society to ensure justice for future generations.
He reiterated Oman’s support for humanitarian efforts and for parliamentary initiatives aimed at promoting peace in conflict zones.
The Assembly, held from April 14 to 19 under the theme ‘Promoting hope, consolidating peace and ensuring justice for future generations,’ brought together parliamentary leaders from across the world.
On the sidelines, the Omani delegation took part in Gulf, Arab and Asian coordination meetings, as well as sessions of the Union of Councils of Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Discussions focused on building a fair global economy and strengthening the role of parliaments in post-conflict recovery.
The delegation also participated in the 217th session of the Governing Council, the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, and meetings covering sustainable development, democracy, human rights, international peace, and UN affairs.
Al Maawali held bilateral talks with several parliamentary leaders to explore avenues for strengthening cooperation and addressing issues of mutual interest.
The delegation included members of the Majlis Ash’shura and Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura. – ONA
