Dad rocker Phil Collins and reformed Britpop princes Oasis led the 2026 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, announced live on US television on Monday.
Joining them in this year’s lineup are punk icon Billy Idol, soulful chanteuse Sade and heavy metal legends Iron Maiden. Influential Manchester acts Joy Division and New Order were also honoured, alongside groundbreaking hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan and velvet-voiced R&B crooner Luther Vandross.
The announcement came during a live episode of the long-running TV competition American Idol, helmed for the occasion by rock duo Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, adding a celebratory and high-profile platform to reveal this year’s honourees and amplify excitement among global audiences.
“Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music’s highest honour”, said John Sykes, chairman of the organisation. “We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year’s ceremony — it’s going to be an unforgettable night”.
The induction ceremony, which doubles as a star-studded concert gala filled with tributes to the honourees, will take place on November 14 in Los Angeles, bringing together industry figures, collaborators and fans to celebrate decades of musical influence and cultural impact across genres, from rock and metal to soul and hip hop.
To be eligible for nomination, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to consideration. This year marks the first nomination for Phil Collins, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan, making their eventual induction especially significant milestones in their careers and long-awaited recognition from the industry.
Meanwhile, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division, New Order, Oasis and Sade had all been nominated in previous years but were not selected until now, underscoring the competitive nature of the process and the breadth of talent considered each year across generations.
The 2025 class of inductees included Outkast, The White Stripes and Cyndi Lauper, highlighting the Hall’s continued recognition of influential artists across diverse musical eras and evolving styles. — AFP
