MUSCAT: Oman’s Al Shabab arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as they will gear up for a crucial phase in their continental campaign at the AFC Challenge League 2025–26 knockout stage. The team departed on Monday in preparation for the single-leg quarterfinals and semifinals which is scheduled to take place from April 19 to 22.
Under the leadership of Dutch coach Eelco Schattorie, Al Shabab opted to arrive early in Bishkek to ensure optimal preparation ahead of their quarterfinal clash against Kuwait SC on Sunday at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium. On the same day, Al Ansar FC will face FC Muras United, with the winners of both matches advancing to the West Asia semifinal set for April 22.
The coaching staff is utilising the lead-up period to help players adapt to the local weather conditions and familiarise themselves with the match venue at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium, ensuring readiness for the high-stakes fixtures. Schattorie is expected to rely on key players including Maleko Kenyan, Yassine Saindou, Hatim al Rousdhi, Ahmed al Riyami, Yassin al Shiyadi and Yousef al Shabibi as the team will target progression to the next round.
Al Shabab head into the tournament in strong form and high spirits following a commanding 7-0 victory over Samayil in the previous round of the domestic Jindal League. The Barka and Wadi Al Maawil-based side currently placed in third place in the standings with 44 points.
Despite their bid to host matches in Muscat not being accepted by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Al Shabab remain determined to make their mark on the continental stage and revive Oman’s recent success in Asian competitions, inspired by the triumph of Seeb Club, who lifted the AFC Cup title in 2022.
Schattorie emphasised previously in a statement to Oman Observer that he is focused on match-by-match approach. “At this level, every game is tough and unpredictable. Our priority is to prepare the players both physically and tactically to compete at the highest level. Despite some injuries, we are working hard to ensure the squad is fully ready. The players are committed and will fight for victory,” he said.
