MUSCAT: While adverse weather often leaves behind devastation, it can also reveal powerful stories of unity and resilience.
In Al Hoqain, such a story has emerged in the aftermath of recent heavy rains, as residents came together to rebuild their community mosque.
The Al Hoqain Mosque was among the structures severely affected by the low-pressure system Al Masarat.
Torrential rains and flash floods between March 31 and April 2 submerged the mosque almost entirely, causing extensive damage.
The weather system brought heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and strong winds across several governorates, including Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Muscat, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Wusta and Dhofar. The conditions led to widespread flooding, reduced visibility and the loss of more than 15 lives.
Despite the destruction, the people of Al Hoqain responded with determination. Residents — both citizens and expatriates — formed teams, assigned responsibilities, and launched a coordinated effort to clean, restore, and rebuild the mosque.
“We formed groups and distributed tasks for clean-up and rehabilitation. Each team had a leader overseeing the work. Those days reflected true dedication and mutual understanding,” said Abdullah al Khadouri, an HSE expert at OQ, who actively participated in the initiative.
Today, the mosque stands restored, symbolising the community’s resilience and collective spirit. Worshippers are preparing to return, with the mosque once again serving residents of the surrounding areas.
Residents expressed gratitude to all who contributed, including the Royal Oman Police, Al Rustaq Municipality, Ishraqah Foundation for Community Development, Al Hoqain Sports Team, Jama Volunteer Team, and supporters from outside the area.
The rebuilding of the mosque stands as a lasting testament to what unity and collective action can achieve in the face of adversity.
