Oman launches preliminary study on 6G networks

Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a preliminary study on the deployment of 6G networks.

6G is the sixth generation of cellular networks, expected to be ready for commercial markets by the early 2030s, which will unleash new possibilities across telecom, technology sectors, wider industry, and society.

The scope of the TRA study is to enable national readiness for 6G networks in the Sultanate of Oman, infrastructure requirements for 6G networks, and spectrum bands for 6G technology and practical applications of 6G.

The objectives will be to enable emerging technologies in the telecom sector, early readiness to support the adoption of next-generation technologies, and enhance local value creation.

What is a 6G Network?

Advanced technology for mobile communication systems, enabling more efficient, faster, more flexible, and more reliable services.

It can be used in advanced security systems, Internet of Things applications (IoT), and advanced support for AI applications.

According to Ericsson, 6G will build on 5G, evolving from today’s networks towards the needs of 2030 and beyond.
The first wave of 6G will advance technologies and use cases already introduced in the 5G era, delivering essential support for key services and deployment scenarios from day one.
'This includes enhancements to network exposure, programmable networks, and use cases like enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), fixed wireless access (FWA), and the Internet of Things (IoT).'
