MUSCAT: The latest forecasts and analyses from the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre indicate that the weather over the Sultanate of Oman will be affected by a trough of low pressure starting from Tuesday evening and continuing until the morning of Thursday. There are chances of rainfall of varying intensity, associated with thundershowers and fresh winds. These conditions may lead to flash floods in wadis and valleys, as well as reduced horizontal visibility during rainfall.
The centre pointed out that clouds advection and formation are expected starting from Tuesday evening over the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Batinah North, Al Wusta and Dhofar. This will bring chances of scattered rainfall that may be associated with thundershowers at times, with a low (limited) impact level. The expected effects during this period include light to moderate rains causing limited runoff in valleys, along with light to moderate winds ranging from 10 to 20 knots.
The centre noted that from Wednesday evening until Thursday morning (April 1-2), forecasts indicate continued cloud formation and advection over the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah North, Al Sharqiyah South and Al Wusta. There are chances of rainfall of varying intensity, sometimes associated with thundershowers, which will extend to Dhofar Governorate.
The level of impact is expected to be low to moderate, which may lead to flash floods in some wadis and fresh winds with speeds ranging from 15 to 30 knots (27 to 55 km/hr).
Sea conditions are expected to feature moderate to rough waves along most of the coasts of Oman, with maximum wave heights reaching 2 to 3 metres. Therefore, it is advised not to go to sea during thunderstorm activity.
The Civil Aviation Authority urges everyone to exercise caution during rainfall and flash floods, to be mindful of reduced horizontal visibility, to check sea conditions before heading out and to follow the official weather bulletins issued by the authority. - ONA
