The Public Prosecution of Oman has reiterated the importance of respecting public decency and adhering to the social values and traditions of Omani society, warning that appearing in public places in a manner that offends modesty or contradicts prevailing customs is punishable under the law.
In an awareness message shared on its official account on the social media platform X, the authority stated that appearing in public roads or places with attire or an appearance that violates public decency or contradicts the customs and traditions of society constitutes a legal offence.
The Public Prosecution noted that Omani legislation places strong emphasis on safeguarding social values and protecting public morals as part of the broader effort to maintain social stability and community order.
According to the authority, individuals found guilty of such acts may face imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of up to RO 300, or one of the two penalties under Article (294/1) of the Penal Code, which criminalises acts that offend public modesty in public places or areas accessible to the public.
The statement forms part of the Public Prosecution’s ongoing awareness campaign aimed at strengthening legal literacy among members of the community and reminding them to comply with laws regulating public behaviour in shared spaces such as streets, markets, parks and other public facilities.
Officials stressed that respecting public decorum is a collective responsibility requiring awareness and cooperation from all segments of society.
They clarified that such laws are not intended to restrict personal freedoms but to regulate them in a manner that balances individual liberties with the preservation of public values that underpin the social fabric of the Oman.
Maintaining a respectful appearance in public places, the authority said, reflects the civilised image of society and promotes a culture of mutual respect among citizens, residents and visitors.
The Public Prosecution added that these awareness messages are part of its broader digital outreach initiatives aimed at educating the public about key legal provisions related to public conduct and highlighting behaviours that may carry legal consequences.
Legal observers note that such campaigns play an important role in promoting legal awareness within society, particularly through the wide reach of social media platforms that enable institutions to communicate directly with the public.
They also emphasised that proactive awareness helps prevent violations by clearly outlining the legal boundaries governing behaviour in public spaces.
Observers further pointed out that preserving social values and public morals remains a core pillar of Omani society, closely linked to the cultural identity and traditions that define the community.
In this context, the Public Prosecution urged members of the public to respect prevailing customs and traditions and avoid practices that may offend public decency or disrupt public order, stressing that compliance with the law is a shared responsibility that helps safeguard social harmony and national values.
