STRENGTH THROUGH FASTING

As the world navigates difficult and uncertain times, fasting during Ramadhan can help people develop inner strength and compassion, says Paula Antelo, an Argentinian volunteer at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque who observes the fast every day.
“Sometimes it is difficult to understand conflicts that claim to seek freedom, yet often leave behind death, devastation and pain,” says Paula, who also serves as General Manager of Ayuni Travel Agency.
“I have also found myself calming those far away from me who worry when they watch the news. In those moments, we learn to be strong for others as well,” she adds.
For Paula, the arrival of Ramadhan each year brings a sense of joy that she finds difficult to fully express.
“At home, we begin with small preparations — decorating, setting our intentions for the month, and praying that it will be a time of ease and blessings for everyone,” says Paula, who has been living in Oman for the past nine years after marrying an Omani.
“Sometimes it is hard to tune, and the volume suddenly rises unexpectedly, but it has become our beloved ‘Ramadhan radio’,” she says with a smile.
This year, Paula says she also made a conscious effort to focus on healthier food habits during the holy month.
“One of my goals was to pay more attention to what we eat. We are not getting any younger, so our Iftar meals have been simpler and healthier — always enough to share, but without waste. Having a plate of food is truly a blessing.”
Although the fasting days have felt easier than she expected, the month has also brought moments of personal trial.
“Still, the tests also arrived — the kind of moments that somehow make us stronger. This Ramadhan I had to say goodbye to my father-in-law. Because of his health condition, his passing was merciful for him, but it still hurts,” she reflects.
For Paula, Ramadhan ultimately remains a time for patience, compassion and faith.
“All that remains is to pray that we can complete this month of fasting, charity and kindness with strength,” she says.
“May all our fasting and prayers be heard, and may we live in peace in a world that sometimes feels harsh and bleeding, even when we do not always see it.”
