Fixing the aftermath of the deception that triggered the Israel, US, Iran war is now problematic. The situation has created national security issues embroiled in the smoke of toxins emitted by oil spills and weaponry. Intentional actions have also produced widespread consequences.
Regional diplomatic relations are as murky as they can be. It has never been a perfect relationship, but it has worked through its ups and downs over the decades.
Emerging dynamics of the situation have followed the US and Israel’s launch of a war with attacks on multiple locations in Iran. These moves force energy producers, governments and military establishments to abandon a policy of contingency planning. Now, they must move towards crisis management.
In wartime, government and military leaders rarely reveal the full scope of their actions. In fact, war relies on manufactured narratives. All sides in a conflict have powerful motivations to exaggerate their successes and downplay their losses. Restricting information to prevent panic or hide tactical failures is part of the strategies used against those most affected by the outcomes.
Under heightened threat levels, uncertainty arises due to interconnected issues such as food, water and energy security, as well as managing internal threats and an increase in the number of countries becoming involved.
The concept of mutual extermination as a justification for launching wars, whether to kill for peace, for freedom, liberation, or regime change, has been observed, notably from the 2003 US-led coalition’s Operation Iraqi Freedom, which invaded Iraq and deposed Saddam Hussein.
The justification for armed intervention is driven by a mix of geopolitical competition, resource control and accusations of illegitimacy. We are aware of the situations in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Yemen and Venezuela – and engagements in several African countries.
The game is risky, and all parties are aware of dramatic follow-ups such as intense human experiences, societal shifts, operational friction and moral ambiguity. Events are moving fast, and the situation is becoming increasingly complex. Given the current vulnerabilities, no country wants to lose face. The stakes are high between the US, Israel and Iran.
In another vulnerable scenario, internal security challenges in the Gulf countries are multifaceted. They are driven by the need to protect critical infrastructure, manage foreign populations and prevent regional conflicts’ spillover into domestic instability. The region is at a critical juncture, navigating a multipolar security environment.
How will the Gulf countries manage future relations with Iran, the United States and Israel, and what is in the cards for China and Russia in keeping a low profile in the current conflict? It is not far-fetched to predict that the United States, Israel and Iran may continue the war for some time. Russia might think about advancing farther into Europe. Pandora's box has been opened.
The Gulf countries have been shifting away from total reliance on the US security umbrella. Countries in the region have been prioritising economic diversification, engaging with Iran, and fostering ties with China, Türkiye, and India for trade, technology, and regional influence.
In ‘The Gulf Monarchies and the Multifaceted Security Challenges They Face’, author John Calabrese writes, “Despite efforts to strengthen regional security, the Gulf Arab countries have not yet overcome their historical reliance on external guarantors, primarily the United States (...). This reliance, combined with internal rivalries and divergent responses to regional conflicts, has hindered the establishment of a unified defence strategy.”
The region stands at a crucial turning point where leaders must balance economic and security interests as they downplay assertive language and limit responses. The ongoing instability will force the region to redefine its alignments and navigate the consequences of the current situation.
