Confronting rumours requires community awareness

MUSCAT: Community awareness stands out as a fundamental pillar in confronting rumours and misinformation, especially during times of crisis and regional tensions, which usually witness a significant increase in the circulation of inaccurate news, in light of the great acceleration in the flow of news through social media platforms.
Omani citizens and residents on this good land embody a conscious community partnership in confronting rumours, obtaining information from official sources and not being swayed by rumours or unreliable information.
A number of specialists confirmed to the Oman News Agency that confronting rumours requires community awareness and shared responsibility between official bodies, individuals and institutions, noting that verifying information before publishing it contributes to reducing the effects of misleading information and enhances the stability of society and its confidence in official sources.
Dr Ahmed bin Ali al Shuaibi said, “The word in the balance of truth is not just a passing sound or a momentary expression, but rather it is a moral and cognitive responsibility that has a profound impact on shaping awareness and preserving society.'
He pointed out that the most dangerous thing that societies face in times of crisis is not only the clamour of events, but the intellectual noise that may confuse minds and obscure the truth.
He said that a rumour, in its essence, is not just an error in the circulation of news, but rather an act that leads to confusion of public awareness and the tearing apart of trust among members of society, indicating that societies that allow the spread of unreliable news gradually turn into an environment in which it is easy to mislead public opinion and weaken social cohesion.
He pointed out that community awareness constitutes the first line of defence in confronting this phenomenon, as it begins with the individual’s awareness of his moral and legal responsibility when dealing with information, stressing that digital platforms have become spaces for testimony and documentation, and not just transient spaces for expression or entertainment.
