MUSCAT: Oman’s international striker Mohsin al Ghassani is continuing to build a strong professional reputation in Asian football as he impresses with Bangkok United FC in the Thai League. Since his joining the Thai club in July 2024, the forward from Al Suwaiq has been playing an important role in the team’s attacking line, contributing with strong technical performances as Bangkok United compete for domestic and continental titles.
Speaking to Oman Observer from Bangkok, al Ghassani described his experience in Thailand as one of the most valuable steps in his professional career. “This is a very exciting professional experience for me,” he said. “The Thai League has developed a lot in recent years. It is now ranked among the strongest leagues in Asia and continues to grow every season with the presence of professional players from around the world.”
Al Ghassani explained that the competitive level in Thailand has been a major factor in his development as a player. “In the Thai League, even the lower-ranked clubs have at least five foreign professional players. The competition is very strong and the rhythm of the matches is high. Every day I learn something new and gain more experience.”
SECOND PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY
The move to Thailand represents Al Ghassani’s second professional experience outside Oman. His first international stint came in 2020 when he joined Iranian giants Sepahan S.C. for one season. Now in Thailand, the Omani striker is playing in a highly competitive environment with players from Europe and other footballing regions.
“Playing against experienced international players has helped me improve my technical performance. The league is fully professional and the level of competition pushes you to give your best every day,” he said.
Strong season
Bangkok United have been among the top teams in Thailand in recent seasons. The club finished runners-up in the league for the second consecutive year and continues to compete strongly for major honours. “Bangkok United is one of the best clubs in Thailand,” Al Ghassani said. “This season we are again among the teams competing for the title and we are working hard to achieve success.”
The team is also competing in the AFC Champions League Two this season. Bangkok United recently secured a 2-1 victory over Tampines Rovers FC in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash and will aim to confirm qualification to the semifinals in the return match on Thursday.
“Last season we exited in the Round of 16, but this year our target is to reach the semifinals and hopefully the final,” Al Ghassani said. “We have a strong squad with many Thai national team players and experienced foreign professionals.”
FYTURE CONTRACT
Regarding his future with Bangkok United, the Omani striker revealed that discussions over a contract extension are expected to become clearer very soon. “There is an intention from the club to renew my contract and we will likely have a clearer picture this month,” he said. “I will carefully review the offer and also consider any other opportunities before making the final decision.”
Balancing between football and Ramadhan
Al Ghassani is also experiencing a unique challenge this month as he balanced professional football commitments with fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan. He explained that some days include two training sessions, which can be physically demanding while fasting. “Sometimes I feel tired because we have morning and evening training sessions,” he said. “The evening session is easier because it is closer to the time of breaking the fast.”
The striker praised his club for respecting Muslim players during Ramadhan. “The club is very supportive. Sometimes they excuse us from morning meetings, but we still attend training sessions. In some matches there are short breaks that allow Muslim players to break their fast.”
Al Ghassani added that proper nutrition and preparation helped him to maintain his performance levels during the fasting period. “I focus on specific food and nutrition so I can continue fasting throughout the day, even when I have training or matches.”
NATIONAL TEAM
Despite his club commitments abroad, Al Ghassani remained eager to represent Oman national football team whenever possible. He acknowledged that the busy professional schedule sometimes prevents him from participating in tournaments held outside official Fifa windows, but his commitment to the national team remains strong.
“I am always ready to represent Oman whenever the opportunity comes during FIFA days,” he said.
GROWING EXPERIENCE
Competing regularly in one of Asia’s most competitive leagues and in continental tournaments has provided Al Ghassani with valuable experience that he believes will benefit both his club and the national team. “The level of competition is very high and the matches are intense. Playing in these environments helped me to gain new ideas and improve my performance,” he concluded.
