The Oman Chess Committee and Active Oman Centre have announced the organisation of a chess tournament as part of the Active Challenge initiative during the month of Ramadhan. The event will feature Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships from March 12 to 14, 2026, after Taraweeh prayers, from 9 pm to 1 am.
The tournament aims to provide organised competition for players of various categories, with cash prizes awarded to the top positions, in addition to special prizes for age groups (under-16 and under-12) and best female player, as part of efforts to support the growth of the game and encourage youth and female participation.
The event will kick off with the Rapid Chess Championship on Thursday and Friday, March 12–13, after Taraweeh prayers from 9 pm to 1 am. The organising committee has allocated cash prizes for the top winners: RO 200 for first place, RO 150 for second, RO 100 for third, RO 60 for fourth and RO 30 for fifth place. Additional prizes of RO 20 each will be awarded to the best under-16 player, best under-12 player and best female player, in support of emerging talents and broader participation within the chess community.
The competitions will continue on Saturday, March 14, with the Blitz Chess Championship, which will be played over 9 rounds with a time control of 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment per move, from 9 pm to 1 am. Cash prizes for this event include RO 140 for first place, RO 100 for second, RO 50 for third, RO 30 for fourth and RO 20 for fifth place, along with the same incentive prizes for age categories and best female player.
These tournaments are part of a joint effort by Active Oman and the Oman Chess Committee to strengthen chess in the community and create a structured competitive environment that improves technical performance and raises the level of competition, especially among youth and junior players. This, in turn, supports expanding the participation base and enhancing talent identification pathways.
