SUR: The Wilayat of Sur will mark the laying of the foundation stone next Wednesday, February 11, for the “Masar” waterfront development project in the Al-Bar area, with an estimated investment of around RO 2 million. The initiative forms part of Al Sharqiyah South Governorate’s efforts to upgrade urban facilities and improve quality of life through partnerships with the private sector.
The project will feature a health walkway, a dedicated cycling track, children’s play areas and public seating zones, alongside padel courts developed for investment purposes. It will also include restaurants, cafés and commercial kiosks, creating a mixed-use leisure and commercial destination along the waterfront.
The ceremony will be held under the auspices of Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi, Head of the Tax Authority and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oman LNG Development Foundation.
Aligned with Oman Vision 2040, the project aims to create an integrated urban destination combining sports, leisure and commercial services, while enhancing the utilisation of the waterfront and strengthening the city’s tourism and investment appeal.
Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of Al Sharqiyah South, said the project represents a significant addition to Sur and reflects the governorate’s commitment to developing sustainable public facilities that meet community needs. He noted that the Masar waterfront development is designed to promote healthy lifestyles, provide suitable spaces for sports and recreation; and stimulate local economic activity.
Al Maawali added that the initiative is part of the broader “Masar” programme implemented by Oman LNG in cooperation with the governorate across several wilayats, focusing on developing waterfronts, walkways and public spaces. The Al Sharqiyah South Governorate will supervise implementation with support from Oman LNG, with construction scheduled to begin on September 11 and expected to be completed within one year. — ONA
