WINTER BLOOM BOOSTS VISITORS

NAKHAL: Wakan Village in the Wilayat of Nakhal, Al Batinah South Governorate, welcomed 39,976 visitors in 2025, marking a steady rise from 36,759 visitors in 2024 and 35,302 in 2023.
The increase reflects the village’s growing reputation as a distinctive mountain tourism destination, attracting visitors from within the Sultanate of Oman and abroad.
Known for its terraced farms, ancient mountain trails and cool climate, Wakan offers a unique blend of eco-tourism, adventure and heritage experiences.

Dr Al Muatasim bin Nasser al Hilali, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Batinah South Governorate, said the growth in visitor numbers represents a qualitative leap driven largely by favourable winter weather and the village’s seasonal natural spectacles.
He noted that from late January to February, apricot and plum trees burst into bloom, covering the village in shades of white and pink — a rare scene often compared to Japan’s cherry blossom season. The bloom attracts photographers, hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking cooler temperatures at an elevation of approximately 2,000 metres above sea level.

The grape harvest season and the popularity of mountain hiking — particularly the 700-step ascent to the village summit — further contribute to visitor flows, especially during weekends and public holidays.
Dr Al Hilali added that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is working to enhance infrastructure, including securing mountain pathways with guardrails and rest areas, expanding parking facilities and encouraging residents to convert traditional homes into guesthouses and heritage lodges.

'The ministry is studying the feasibility of a cable car or alternative transport system to ease congestion during peak seasons, in coordination with the ROP,' he said.
