MUSCAT: The activities of the Oman Society of Emergency Medicine Conference (OSEM26) commenced on Thursday under the theme 'Elevating Excellence in Emergency Care: Innovation, Integration and Impact'.
The three-day event features extensive participation from doctors, nurses, researchers, and emergency healthcare specialists from both within the Sultanate of Oman and abroad.
Dr Hassan bin Issa al Balushi, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Toxicology and Chairman of the Organising Committee for OSEM26, emphasised that emergency medicine represents a humanitarian mission before being a medical specialty.
He noted that this field deals with critical moments where time is a decisive factor and decisions carry a responsibility that leaves no room for error.
He explained that the conference theme confirms a realistic approach aimed at developing emergency care, enhancing innovation in practices, integrating the roles of medical teams and achieving a tangible impact.
He pointed out that the scientific programme of the conference was designed to translate this slogan into practice, featuring 62 scientific lectures presented by 72 local and international experts in various fields of emergency medicine. This is in addition to six advanced workshops focusing on clinical skills, decision-making under critical conditions and working within multi-disciplinary teams, with participation from speakers from several countries, which enhances the exchange of expertise and keeps pace with global developments in the field.
He added that the conference is also witnessing the submission and review of more than 40 scientific research papers, 30 of which are being showcased in the accompanying scientific exhibition to support the culture of scientific research and knowledge exchange among specialists.
The conference serves as an advanced scientific platform aimed at discussing the latest scientific and applied developments in emergency medicine, enhancing the quality of emergency healthcare and elevating clinical practices according to the latest globally approved scientific evidence.
OSEM26 includes a rich scientific programme spanning three days, featuring a group of specialised educational and applied tracks covering a wide spectrum of emergency medicine fields. The conference reviews more than 30 scientific research papers presented by researchers and specialists from various countries, highlighting the latest studies, clinical trials and innovative practices in emergency medicine.
Prior to the official scientific sessions, several specialised training workshops were organised, focusing on developing the practical skills of participants and raising the level of clinical readiness for dealing with critical cases through realistic scenarios simulating the work environment in emergency departments.
The workshops covered advanced areas, including Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV), Advanced Electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis, paediatric critical care, Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in emergency and critical cases, as well as disaster medicine and emergency response, among other training programmes.
The conference reaffirms its position as one of the most prominent specialised scientific conferences in emergency medicine and its pivotal role in supporting the sustainable development of this vital specialty in line with the aspirations of the national health system and global best practices.
The opening of the conference was held under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development for Persons with Disabilities Affairs. - ONA
