SUR: The 'Smart Governorates Hackathon' concludes on Sunday, in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, and is held under the slogan 'Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Future.'
Organised in collaboration with the Oman Information Technology Association, the four-day event brings together young innovators, entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts from across Oman.
The hackathon aims to empower participants to develop smart technological solutions addressing local development challenges and transform creative ideas into viable prototypes. It aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, focusing on digital transformation, innovation, sustainable development and building a knowledge-based economy.
More than 100 participants — including university students, programmers, app developers and UI/UX designers — are working in multidisciplinary teams under the guidance of experts in digital transformation, artificial intelligence and sustainability.
The event features six main themes: environment and sustainability, smart cities and services, smart agriculture and fishing, transportation and safety, e-commerce, and smart urban planning.
Eng Abdullah bin Saif al Araimi, Head of the Digital Transformation Team in Al Sharqiyah South, highlighted the hackathon’s role in promoting innovation, supporting technical initiatives and strengthening public-private sector partnerships.
The hackathon serves as a prelude to the Smart Governorates Conference. The conference will bring together decision-makers, government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, experts, and innovators to share best practices and experiences in developing smart governorates. - ONA
