SALALAH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is implementing two fishing port projects in the Wilayat of Sadah, Dhofar Governorate, at a total cost of RO 5.8 million, as part of efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector and support coastal communities.
The projects involve the construction of fishing ports in the Hasik district and the Hadbin area, aimed at enhancing the utilisation of fisheries resources, improving services for fishermen and creating an attractive environment for investment in port-related activities.
Eng Abdul Nasser bin Awbad Ghawas, Director of the Fisheries Department, said that construction is progressing steadily, with the Hasik project 34 per cent complete and the Hadbin project reaching 50 per cent completion.
Each port includes the development of breakwaters and floating docks, alongside essential infrastructure such as internal roads, lighting and public facilities designed to support fishermen and improve operational efficiency.
Looking ahead, Eng Ghawas noted that four additional fisheries projects are planned in Dhofar under the Ministry’s project matrix. These include the development of the fishing port in the Wilayat of Mirbat, as well as the construction of new ports in central Sadah, the Wilayat of Rakhyout; and the Niabat of Al Shuwaimiyah in the Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands.
Fishing ports play a vital role in supporting livelihoods, accommodating higher catch volumes and providing facilities for landing, marketing, trading and vessel maintenance. They also contribute to social and economic development in coastal areas and help raise the fisheries sector’s contribution to the national economy. — ONA
