Electronics retailer in Muscat fined for failing to provide invoice in Arabic

 

The Muscat Governorate Court of First Instance issued a ruling in a consumer protection case against a retail company specializing in electronics.

After installation, he noticed malfunctions in the air conditioning units and a significant increase in electricity consumption, inconsistent with the contractual agreement. Despite the company performing some maintenance and inspections, the consumer maintained that the service provided did not meet the agreed-upon standards.

The ruling stemmed from a consumer complaint regarding the company's failure to honor its warranty and provide maintenance for supplied air conditioning units.
The case details reveal that a consumer contracted with the retail company to install an air conditioning system in his home with a five-year warranty.

This prompted him to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Authority, which, after completing its investigation and gathering the necessary documents and technical reports, referred the case to the Public Prosecution.

After considering the case, the court ruled in the presence of the defendants, declaring them innocent of the misdemeanor of 'the supplier's failure to provide the service to the consumer properly and in accordance with its nature,' and the misdemeanor of 'the supplier's failure to guarantee repair and maintenance' due to insufficient evidence.

However, they were convicted of the misdemeanor of 'the supplier's failure to provide the consumer with an invoice written in Arabic proving that he received the service,' and were sentenced to a fine of RO1,000 each.

The civil claim was referred to the competent department.
