MOH calls for urgent O+platelet donation to save liver transplant patient

Muscat: The Ministry of Health (MoH) appealed for the immediate donation of O positive platelets to help save the life of a patient who requires an emergency liver transplant in the coming hours.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the urgent appeal is aimed at supporting a critical surgical procedure, underscoring the importance of timely community response in life-saving situations.

The ministry confirmed that platelet donation will be received at the Blood Bank in Bausher from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, urging eligible donors with O positive blood type to come forward without delay.

The MoH reiterated that blood and platelet donation procedures are conducted under strict medical supervision.

The process begins with completing a health assessment form, followed by verification of the donor’s civil ID or resident card. Donors then undergo haemoglobin and blood pressure checks to ensure eligibility.

The donation process typically takes between five and 15 minutes, during which approximately 450 millilitres of blood or the required platelet units are collected. Donors are advised to rest briefly afterwards and are provided with refreshments.

The ministry highlighted that regular voluntary donations play a vital role in sustaining emergency medical services and supporting complex procedures such as organ transplants, calling on the public to continue contributing to national blood supplies.
