Al Maqbali emerge champion of Badminton championship

MUSCAT: Salim al Maqbali of Masirah club retained the title of Men’s singles event for senior category of Oman Badminton Clubs Championship following his victory in style over Sultan al Shaibani from Al Amerat club by 2-0 on Saturday night at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. The opening set ended for al Mabali by 21-16 while the following set finished at 21-12 to seal crucial triumph for the second successive time. Khalil al Darmaki of Bausher Club and Nasser al Jabri of Sohar Club shared third place award. In the doubles event, Oman Club dominated the competition, as both of its pairs advanced to the final to secure first and second places. Taqah Club and Al Amerat Club finished joint third, highlighting the competitive balance and depth of talent across participating teams.
As many as 15 domestic clubs took part in the event registering a record number of the participations. The participating clubs represented various governorates across the Sultanate of Oman including: Salalah, Al Bashaer, Al Musannah, Seeb, Al Shabab, Oman Club, Saham, Sohar, Fanja, Taqah, Bausher, Ibri, Al Amerat, Qurayat and Masirah. The strong turnout reflected the growing popularity of badminton in Oman and the increasing commitment of clubs to developing the sport and competing for national honours. This event marked the official conclusion of the Oman Racket Sports Committee’s (ORSC) sporting calendar for the current year.
The three days event was concluded on Saturday in presence of Dr Rashid bin Saif al Maherzi, Member of the State Council, and was attended by Dr Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, along with committee members, representatives of participating clubs, badminton enthusiasts, and supporters, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere. Following the final match, the chief guest delivered the awards and medals to the winning teams.
The tournament was marked by a high technical standard and intense competition, bringing together experienced players and promising young talents in an environment that encouraged competitive exposure, skill development, and the exchange of experience. ORSC has intensified its community outreach efforts through initiatives such as school-based badminton programmes, outdoor badminton activities, and championships for centres and clubs. These efforts have significantly boosted public interest in the sport and contributed to the successful conclusion of a season filled with tournaments and development activities throughout 2025.
