Al Batinah North Seminar highlights child abuse surge

In a continued effort to safeguard children’s rights and raise community awareness, the General Directorate of Health Services in Al Batinah North organised a comprehensive seminar on Child Protection from Abuse.
The event was held under the auspices of Dr Hassan bin Abdullah al Balushi, Director of Health Services in Al Batinah North, with participation from Dr Ibrahim al Shibli, General Director of Health Services in Al Buraimi, and Dr Yousef al Kaabi, Director of Primary Healthcare.
Dr Khalid al Raisi, Specialist in Mental Health and member of the Child Protection Committee, highlighted the surge in child abuse reports in Al Batinah North, noting a 112-per cent increase in 2024 compared to the previous year, with neglect accounting for 41 per cent of reports and physical abuse 27 per cent.
Speakers addressed the multi-dimensional aspects of child protection, including legal frameworks, psychological effects, digital risks and the role of cross-sector interventions.
Cyberbullying was identified as a growing concern, affecting an estimated 20–40 per cent of children and adolescents globally.
The Ministry of Social Development outlined its role in intervention and counselling, while Public Prosecution official Amer al Amri discussed legal protections and the work of Child Protection Committees nationwide. Additional sessions covered forensic medicine, drug-related vulnerabilities and the long-term impacts of abuse.
The seminar concluded with a panel discussion and a ceremony honouring contributors, reaffirming the collective commitment to creating a safer environment for every child in Oman.
