Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has recently become a vital component in Oman’s sustainable development. As Oman diversifies its economy and invests in human development, CSR activities increasingly influence the meeting of social demands, community welfare and Oman Vision 2040 goals. Today, Public Sector, Private Sector and Voluntary Sector Partnerships work to ensure CSR goes beyond philanthropy to become a socially responsible investment to Oman’s future.
Perhaps the most obvious and visible benefit of CSR in Oman is in the area of education and the empowerment of the young. Omani companies, particularly in the energy, banking and telecommunications, sponsor educational scholarship programmes and provide training workshops and support innovation challenges.
These programmes provide students with updated skills for today’s job market, including digital skills, entrepreneurial skills and vocational training. Enhanced educational opportunities offered through CSR are directed to the development of a properly and self confident generation who are able to actively participate in the development of the country.
As with education, CSR community impact and support community development and social welfare. Many businesses support public health, sponsor hospital medical equipment and promote lifestyle disease awareness. Some businesses also support the construction of housing and community centres, as well as the centres for the physically challenged, for the targeted inclusion of the disadvantaged in the country’s development. Such actions enhance the community’s social cohesion and solidarity; and improve and social support welfare of the community.
Environmental protection is another important area of CSR. Oman is a country with diverse ecosystems; mountains and wadis and rich sea ecosystems. Many private businesses, as part of their social responsibility and in line with Oman Vision 2040, support and sponsor conservation projects, which include cleaning the beaches, planting trees; and waste reduction and public education.
CSR in Oman has a positive impact and encourages the intelligent and responsible use of resources. This supports the balance of ecosystems and the proper development of tourism in Oman.
CSR activities have also had an impact on the economic empowerment of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Numerous organisations have extended financial assistance and mentorship and incubation programmes for young business people.
They strengthen the aspiring business owner’s skill set around marketing, financial administration and invention. Supporting the SME sector diversifies the economy of the country, and also offers employment opportunities and self-employment for Omani youth.
On top of that, developed economies, civil societies and the marketplace also ascribe direct workplace development to such programmes. Productivity improvement and the adoption of high positive workplace behaviours are achieved through the safe and ethical construction and engineering of positive workplace environments, coupled with collaboration on employee training.
This internal dimension of CSR anticipates and responds to the need for the competencies to drive the economy to be developed internally.
Most importantly, Oman’s government has also provided guiding hands in the efforts of CSR. To obtain measurable effects, Oman encourages companies to embrace their national priorities, as defined in the regulations and national strategies. Companies are more willing to disclose and report CSR performance, building public confidence and inspiring other companies to responsible behaviours, which is a positive development.
To sum up, CSR has greatly impacted the evolution of the Omani society. Omani society owes the development and sustainability of the Omani society to the active participation of the CSR initiatives in the national growth, education, health, environment, economic empowerment and community welfare.
As Oman works towards Oman Vision 2040, the integration of the business and the community will continue to be the most valuable and important Collaboration. The expansion of CSR demonstrates a collective value of social responsibility as a partnership critical for a future of prosperity and inclusiveness for the society.
