Muscat: The 4th edition of the National Campaign to Raise Awareness About Climatic Hazards and Tsunamis concluded in the Wilayat of Qurayat, Governorate of Muscat, on Thursday. The closing of the 3-day event included an exercise on partial evacuation in the event of tsunamis at Al Munjazat Basic Education School, aimed to train students, administrative and teaching staff about how to deal with such emergency situations.
'The objective was to elevate both community and institutional awareness of weather-related risks, adverse climatic events and tsunami hazards. It also seeks to strengthen public understanding of the multi-hazard early warning system and provide comprehensive guidance on proper conduct during emergencies,' said Aysha al Qasmi, a meteorological specialist at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
The campaign targets representatives of public and private enterprises, civil society organisations, and charitable groups through four main pillars: meetings and seminars, practical exercises, participation in local events and activities, and the issuance of awareness materials.
According to Nasser bin Said al Ismaili from CAA, who presented the topic 'Operational Procedures at the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre for Alerts of Weather Hazards and Tsunamis', the most prominent climatic phenomena and weather patterns affecting Oman are cyclones and tropical storms.
The National Emergency Management Centre (NEMC) explained in their presentation that the aim is to protect lives and property, achieve public safety, reduce the risks of natural and industrial disasters, minimise their effects, and implement measures and procedures related to civil defence and ambulance work on roads and in emergency situations.
Major Yahya bin Mohammed al Balushi emphasised evacuation, defining it as: 'Moving affected or threatened persons to the nearest safe place, away from danger, while providing care and essential necessities for their survival. Evacuation may be voluntary or mandatory, according to the established plan.'
Captain Mubarak bin Said al Maashari, addressing safety procedures in emergency situations, highlighted the preventive measures that should be taken before the event occurs. 'Educate yourself and those around you about everything related to tsunamis. Identify the areas expected to be exposed to tsunami waves and the safest places. Choose a residential location on high ground and away from coastal areas, wadis, and water bodies. Design your house using resistant building materials and with a design that allows you quick and safe escape routes to a higher area.'
