Rights of persons with disabilities highlighted on Human Rights Day

MUSCAT: In conjunction with International Human Rights Day, the Oman Human Rights Commission commemorated the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Wednesday under the theme ‘The Rights of Persons with Disabilities: National Efforts and Sustainable Achievements’. The event was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Dr Kamil bin Fahd bin Mahmood al Said, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.
The celebration reflected the Commission’s annual approach for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, promoting awareness of universal human values ​​based on equality, dignity and non-discrimination. This year, a central focus was placed on highlighting national achievements related to the rights of persons with disabilities, recognising them as a human rights issue with a direct impact on establishing justice and equal opportunities.
Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, said, “This year, we have dedicated ourselves to celebrating people with disabilities, as the services, laws, and legislation recently issued have granted them many benefits and rights. The committee will work with the relevant authorities to implement these laws and to highlight the remarkable progress Oman has made in caring for and supporting people with disabilities.”
Kulthoom al Balushi, Head of Human Resources at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), said, “The company plays a leading role in supporting and empowering people with disabilities, both within and outside the company. Within the company, we work to promote an inclusive work environment that takes into account the needs of employees with disabilities by providing them with assistive devices and implementing flexible policies, along with special training, empowerment and rehabilitation programmes that enable them to perform and showcase their abilities at the company level in the work environment.”
