MUSCAT, NOV 29
A comprehensive new book exploring the fundamentals of research — its purpose, methodologies, and practical application — has been launched at the School of Foundation Studies (SoFS) at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
Titled ‘Igniting Research in General Foundation Programmes: Research as a Catalyst for Oman’s Educational Future’, the publication marks a significant academic milestone.
Authored by Dr Geethu Anne Mathew, the book was officially unveiled by Dr Salim bin Khamis bin Ali al Araimi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost for Academic Affairs & Research.
He presented the first copy to Warith al Rubai, Director of GFPQA at OAAAQA, in the presence of Dr Saleem bin Khalfan al Habsi, Director of SoFS and Consultant to the NURG Project ‘Enhancing Research Management in General Foundation Programmes in Oman’.
The book underscores the importance of strengthening research within General Foundation Programmes (GFPs), demonstrating how a research-driven approach supports Oman’s transition to a knowledge-based economy in line with Oman Vision 2040.
By positioning GFPs as active research contributors rather than solely teaching pathways, it highlights their national significance and potential to elevate Oman’s global higher education profile.
In his keynote address, Al Rubai emphasised the essential role of research in advancing GFP standards across the Sultanate of Oman. The event also witnessed the inauguration of the Foundation Research Club, reflecting SoFS’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture among faculty members.
Dr Geethu, the author and Principal Investigator of the project, presented an overview of the National University Research Grant (NURG) Project, outlining key milestones and collaborative efforts that shaped new strategies for managing research within GFPs.
“This book is not just a publication — it is a manifesto for transforming education in Oman and beyond. Its launch positions NUST as a regional leader in educational innovation and aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040,” Dr Geethu said.
The NURG Project Team included Co-Investigators Ahammed Basheer, Sreehari V M, Jitha Pramod, and Soji Binu Mathew, whose contributions further strengthened the project’s outcomes.
