NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman welcomes the launch of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, given its comprehensive approach that takes into account emerging developments, including the increasing exploitation of technology and artificial intelligence, the exacerbation of risks in mixed migration contexts, and the rising levels of exposure of women, girls, and children to this serious crime.
This was stated by Ambassador Omar bin Said al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, while participating in a high-level meeting to review the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons in New York.
Al Kathiri said: “The delegation of the Sultanate of Oman is honoured to participate in this meeting dedicated to promoting the implementation of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, a crime that violates human dignity, undermines the rule of law, and poses a direct threat to peace and sustainable development.”
He pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman, through its Vision 2040, affirms that human beings are the focus of national development and continues to implement systematic efforts in the framework of combating human trafficking. The most prominent of these efforts is that Oman has worked to update legislation and laws to keep pace with developments on the national and international scenes.
Oman has recently issued the updated Human Trafficking Law under Royal Decree No 78/2025, which includes a definition of the crime of human trafficking. It also strengthened the means to protect victims by defining medical, psychological and legal care, expediting procedures, enabling victims to cooperate without exposing them to accountability, as well as allocating a whole chapter to international judicial cooperation.
He added, “The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking launched national campaigns, the latest of which is the 'Aman' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the concepts and forms of human trafficking through social media programmes and the media in general, as well as introducing the mechanisms for reporting and dealing with cases. It adopted seven of the most widely spoken languages in its publications, in addition to side events, workshops and awareness exhibitions.”
Al Kathiri emphasised Oman’s firm commitment to international cooperation, support for the role of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and joint action for a world free from human trafficking. - ONA
