Royal Hospital performs first remote urology surgery

MUSCAT: The Royal Hospital, in collaboration with the Sabah Al Ahmad Center in Kuwait, performed its first remote urology surgery using the advanced Toumai surgical robot.
This medical breakthrough embodies the integration of Omani and Kuwaiti medical expertise and opens wider horizons in the field of digital medicine and smart surgery.
The operation is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman and the region. It will enable the surgical teams in the Sultanate of Oman and the State of Kuwait to perform the procedure with high precision and minimal invasiveness while achieving high safety rates and faster patient recovery.
Dr Aamed bin Khamis al Araimi, Director-General of the Royal Hospital, said that this achievement aligns with the Ministry of Health’s directives and the Oman Vision 2040, which aims to adopt the latest technologies and enhance the capabilities of national expertise in advanced surgical fields. He noted that this experience underscored the importance of investing in advanced medical technologies and developing international partnerships to enhance the level of healthcare services and provide specialised care to patients regardless of their location.
Dr Qais bin Mohammed al Hooti, Consultant Urologist at the Royal Hospital, said that performing the first robotic surgery from the Sultanate of Oman to the State of Kuwait constitutes a significant step, adding to the Royal Hospital’s record of successive achievements, having successfully performed the first robotic surgery in the Sultanate of Oman a week ago. — ONA
