SUR: The Department of Applied Biotechnology (ABT) at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS-Sur) hosted a student-led symposium titled ‘Buzz and Balance: Exploring Nature Through Ecology and Entomology’ on November 11. The event, sponsored by Rainbow Chemicals, offered a dynamic exploration of the interconnections between insects and ecosystems.
In her address, Dr Raya al Hajri, Deputy AVC for Electronic Systems and Student Services, commended the students for their scientific curiosity and initiative. “Today’s symposium exemplifies the spirit of inquiry and innovation we nurture at UTAS-Sur,” she said. “The intersection of ecology and entomology is not merely academic — it is essential to understanding and protecting our environment.”
Distinguished guests included Dr Sara al Araimi, Head of the ABT Department, and Dr Salma al Masharafi, former Dean of UTAS-Sur, both of whom shared inspiring insights on the importance of research in environmental sciences. Dr Al Araimi praised the students’ creativity and commitment, saying their research “reflects not only academic excellence, but also a dedication to preserving Oman’s ecosystems.” Dr Al Masharafi added that the students’ enthusiasm “fills me with hope for the future of environmental science in Oman.”
