Fish landing sites boost Musandam’s economic efforts

BUKHA: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is intensifying efforts to develop fish landing sites as part of its strategic plan to enhance the sustainability and growth of Oman’s fisheries sector. These sites serve as critical infrastructure, linking fishing operations with production and marketing, and forming the foundation for efficient seafood supply chains.
Distributed along Oman’s coasts, fish landing sites provide an organised and safe environment for unloading, sorting and handling fish. They help maintain seafood quality, ensure proper health and environmental standards and regulate fishing activities while curbing irregular sales practices.
Abdul Latif bin Mohammed al Balushi, Director-General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Musandam Governorate, highlighted that the governorate’s rich marine resources and diverse fisheries make landing sites key to developing the sector and improving local food security. He noted that the Ghumda and Al Jari sites in the Wilayat of Bukha are among the most promising, aiming to deliver high-quality services to fishermen and enhance fish marketing efficiency.
“These sites also present economic opportunities, attracting SMEs in packaging, transportation, ice production and marine maintenance, while improving fishermen’s living conditions through essential services and logistical support,” he said.
Arif bin Mohammed al Kumzari, Head of Marketing at the Directorate, said the ministry has recently offered investment opportunities for the establishment, management, and operation of the Ghumda and Al Jari landing sites. This initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s emphasis on public-private partnerships to achieve sustainable development, improve service quality, and enhance environmental and economic sustainability.
He added that private sector involvement will strengthen Musandam’s role as a regional hub for high-quality fish trade and exports, supporting the local economy and boosting the competitiveness of Oman’s fisheries sector regionally and internationally. - ONA
