The World Health Organization (WHO) has, for the first time since the ceasefire took effect in the Gaza Strip two weeks ago, brought severely ill and injured children to safety.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported on the platform X that41 children, along with 145 companions, have been taken out of Gaza.
All the patients are children, a WHO spokesman said when asked. Due to 'operational concerns,' it cannot yet be disclosed in which countries the young patients will be treated.
'Around 15 000 patients are still waiting for approval to receive medical care outside Gaza,' Tedros wrote on X. ' We continue to call on countries to show their solidarity and for all routes to be opened to expedite the medical evacuation.'
Such medical transports require permits from the Israeli authorities ,who control access to the Gaza Strip.
The recent Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 10, though there have been periodic violations reported from both sides since then.
