The Sports Training Conference concluded on Thursday, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the National Teams Department at the General Directorate for Sports Care and Development. The event was held under the auspices of Abdullah bin Mohammed Bamakhalaf, Secretary-General of the Oman Olympic Committee and attended by a distinguished group of coaches, lecturers and participants. The conference ran for four consecutive days.
The closing session reviewed the key topics discussed during the conference and addressed the main recommendations proposed by participants following a series of theoretical lectures and practical workshops delivered by international experts. The sessions covered diverse themes, including training programme planning, load management, modern training foundations, strength training for children, recent scientific trends in physical preparation and long-term training development for youth athletes.
The final day also included a theoretical assessment to evaluate how well participants absorbed the conference content, followed by an open discussion session where several coaches shared their experiences and perspectives on enhancing sports training in Oman and emphasised the importance of applying the acquired knowledge in real-world settings.
At the conclusion of the event, the guest of honour presented awards to the international lecturers and participants in recognition of their efforts and contributions throughout the four days. Certificates of participation were also distributed to the coaches who completed the programme.
VALUABLE MILESTONE
Balqees bin Jumaa al Mushaifriyah, a master’s student at Sultan Qaboos University, described the conference as a valuable milestone for her and her peers, especially as they aspire to become professional coaches in the future.
She said the conference was rich in content, featuring prominent professors and experts in sports science and training; and that participants greatly benefitted from the practical sessions, particularly those showcasing modern technologies and precise instruments that can enhance athlete performance. She added that one of her main goals following the conference is to apply theoretical concepts in practical settings to gain deeper field experience and knowledge.
Meanwhile, Waleed bin Khamis al Kiyoumi, Head of the Youth Preparation Centres Department, stated that the participants’ satisfaction by the end of the conference reflects its success, noting the significant volume of knowledge gained over the first three days. He highlighted the participants’ enthusiasm and engagement as indicators of their awareness of the importance of keeping up with modern developments in sports training sciences, emphasising that the field is the true extension of theory.
Al Kiyoumi added that the General Directorate for Sports Care and Development is currently preparing a new project targeting elite coaches in both individual and team sports. The project will focus on sustainability and content modernisation in line with the latest regional and international trends in sports science, aiming to enhance the competence and capabilities of national coaches.
Khalid al Alawi, a participating coach, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry for organising such conferences, describing the workshop as exceptional and highly beneficial, covering multiple aspects of physical training development. He noted that the lectures were highly specialised, allowing participants to improve their methods for dealing with different age groups and to plan training programmes with scientific precision. He expressed hope that all attendees would implement what they learned to improve athletes’ physical performance in their clubs.
Similarly, Mohammed al Balushi, a football coach and participant, said the event was a significant opportunity to gain new expertise from international instructors. He praised the conference for effectively combining theoretical and practical dimensions, noting that the scientific discussions enabled fruitful knowledge exchange among coaches from various sports, ensuring a comprehensive benefit that will positively impact the future of sports training in Oman.
