The number of breast cancer patients in Oman has risen by 119 per cent, according to a report published by the Ministry of Health (MoH).
The World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen October to spread awareness about early detection of breast cancer. This year, the theme of the awareness is ‘Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters’.
To mark the initiative, an event will be held at the College of Banking and Financial Studies (CBFS) on October 3.
Titled ‘Together We Can Ban Cancer’, organised by Barkat Al Noor Clinic in association with the ‘Wings of Women’s World’ and Oman Cancer Association (OCA), the event will highlight the importance of the 3 Ps: prevention, protection and periodic examination.
Speaking to the media, Dr Rajyashree Narayanankutty, an award-winning surgeon, specialising in Breast Cancer diagnosis in Oman for over 33 years at Barkat Al Noor Clinic, said that it is important every woman stays aware of breast cancer and conducts self-examination.
“If there is anything unusual, one must immediately follow up with a doctor. It is important that all the family members go through counselling. Most women hide the symptoms out of fear or concern for the family. Early detection means overcoming cancer.”
Dr Rajyashree said a healthy lifestyle and regular check-ups are very important factors. “Do not be afraid. There is treatment and cure,” she said.
'Although I began my career as a general surgeon, it was a cancer survivor and founder of OCA who is my role model in initiating this mission to spread breast cancer awareness. So, Barkat Al Noor Clinic dedicates all the events and programmes to spread awareness to the community. So, we are extending our support to OCA,' said Dr Rajyashree.
Wings of Women’s World (WWW) is a global non-profit organisation established in September 2020 by Dr Reshmy Krishnan and Dr Rajyashree Narayanankutty in Oman, along with Sheeja Daniel from Qatar. WWW has grown to more than 350 members from 7 countries.
On October 3, during the ‘Ban Cancer’ awareness campaign, WWW members will showcase their talents through various activities, highlighting the organisation’s core values of expertise, compassion and community engagement.
“This joint initiative exemplifies WWW’s dedication to addressing critical health challenges, fostering proactive outreach and supporting women and families globally in the fight against cancer,” said Dr Reshmy.
