NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman has affirmed that just peace is a fundamental pillar for sustainable security, stability, and development.
Delivering Oman’s address to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Sunday, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, stated that the international community is facing a broad spectrum of critical issues that weigh heavily on the conscience of humanity and require genuine cooperation and collective responsibility to address effectively.
'The Sultanate of Oman has repeatedly expressed its vision and clear positions on these matters — foremost among them, the climate crisis and the transitioning to clean and energy sources, in addition to the call for seizing emerging opportunities in trade and sustainable development. However, there remains another humanitarian and political issue — deeply painful and enduring — that must take precedence in our deliberations and decisions: the Palestinian question,' he said.
'For too long, this conflict has persisted. The suffering has grown unbearable and the time has come to end the occupation, lift the injustice, and restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people through the implementation of the two-state solution, which is the only just and viable path toward a lasting and comprehensive peace that ends decades of conflict and deprivation,' he added.
Sayyid Badr said that the Sultanate of Oman is convinced that just peace is a fundamental pillar for sustainable security, stability and development. 'From this perspective, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital must be at the forefront of strategic priorities in the pursuit of just and lasting peace in the Middle East. In this context, the recognition of the State of Palestine stands as the most crucial step in this critical phase of the Palestinian cause,' he said.
He said that Oman expresses its deep appreciation to the governments that have taken this important step — one that reinforces respect for international law and aligns with the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 'Recognising Palestine also reflects the international community’s commitment to the two-state solution, as outlined in UN resolutions, the outcomes of the Two-State Solution Conference, and the New York Declaration under the auspices of the United Nations,' Sayyid Bard said.
The Sultanate of Oman called upon the international community to adopt measures that limit the Israeli government’s ability to continue its policies of genocide, destruction and illegal occupation of Palestinian land and its ongoing policies of starvation and blockade against the Palestinian people and the obstruction of humanitarian aid.
'From this very podium, Oman calls for a global peaceful campaign to lift the siege and the injustice imposed on the Palestinian people, and to secure their freedom through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state,' Sayyid Badr Said.
Meanwhile, Israeli tanks moved deeper into Gaza City's residential districts on Sunday, as local health authorities said they have been unable to respond to dozens of desperate calls, expressing concern about the fate of residents in the targeted areas.
Witnesses and medics said Israeli tanks had deepened their incursions in the Sabra, Tel Al Hawa, Shaikh Radwan and Al Naser neighbourhoods, closing in on the heart and the western areas of Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of people are sheltering. — Agencies
