MUSCAT: The Oman national football team has moved up one spot to 78th place in the Fifa Men’s World Ranking for September. The Red Warriors now stand on 1,320.34 points, an improvement from their previous tally of 1,314.41.
The new Fifa World ranking released by Fifa on Thursday reflected Oman’s solid showing in the recently concluded Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
Oman collected seven points during the group stage, following a 1-1 draw with hosts Uzbekistan. Then, a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Kyrgyzstan and another 2-1 victory against Turkmenistan. Their campaign ended in the third-place playoff against India, where they fell 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Within Asia, Japan maintained their position as the continent’s leading side following their ranking at 19th globally despite dropping two spots.
Iran followed closely as Asia’s second-ranked team at 21st worldwide while South Korea held firm in third place at 23rd overall. Australia slipped one place to 25th but remained fourth in Asia, while Qatar completed the top five at 53rd globally.
Among other Asian movers, Uzbekistan improved to 54th in the world, Iraq climbed to 58th, and Saudi Arabia held 59th position. Jordan made the most significant move within Asia’s top 10, advancing from 64th to 62nd, while the United Arab Emirates remained in 67th place.

On the global stage, Spain reclaimed the number one position, ending Argentina’s two-year reign at the top. France moved up to second, pushing Argentina to third. Portugal also overtook Brazil, climbing into fifth place, while Italy returned to the top 10. The September ranking also marked a milestone for Canada, one of the co-hosts of the Fifa World Cup 2026, as they achieved their highest-ever global ranking.
On the other hand, Red Warriors are gearing up through a domestic preparatory camp for the decisive AFC Asian Qualifiers matches against Qatar and the UAE in October. The Red Warriors will look to secure historic achievement by qualifying to the Fifa World Cup for the first time in the history.
