MUSCAT, SEPT 7
The subsidiary hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher yesterday hosted the closing ceremony of the Level 1 course organised by the World Association of Basketball Coaches. The programme was organised by the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) in cooperation with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the World Association of Basketball Coaches, with the participation of 15 male and female coaches. The sessions were conducted by international lecturer Safa Ali Ahmad Kamelein from Iran and extended over five intensive days, combining both theory and practice. The course introduced the latest training methods and strategies in basketball, with a special focus on developing players’ skills in both offence and defence. Practical sessions highlighted movement basics such as dribbling and running with or without the ball, stopping techniques, and the use of the pivot foot. Participants were also trained in organising practice sessions, instilling individual skills, philosophies of defence and offence, transitional play, as well as team defensive and offensive strategies. Special focus was placed on how to effectively utilise game situations related to time and score management. During the closing ceremony, Abubakar al Jahwari, Vice-President of the OBA and Chairman of the Technical Development Committee, delivered a speech. He emphasised that the course aligns with the Association’s vision to build a solid base of national competencies. He stated: “The Omani coach is the cornerstone of any sports system, and the better prepared he is, the more it reflects positively on the players’ performance and on the development of the game.”
Al Jahwari added that the course, which included examinations designed by FIBA, represents an important step toward raising the level of national coaches and ensuring that training outcomes match global standards. He explained this effort is in line with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises empowering Omani citizens to lead development. The success of our coaches is not just a personal achievement, but part of a national project to prepare Omani cadres capable of competing regionally and internationally.
Participant Marwan al Hadidi described the course as highly successful, saying it provided essential training methodologies that every new coach needs. He expressed gratitude to the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) for its continuous efforts to empower national talents, reflecting a clear strategy for developing the game and raising the level of local coaches.
In conclusion, Al Jahwari reaffirmed that the OBA will continue investing in national coaching talent and working to create a supportive environment for developing the sport locally. He stressed that this approach will help Omani basketball keep pace with the best international practices and secure a promising future for the game in the Sultanate of Oman.
