SALALAH, AUG 30
The Ministry of Education has launched a Travel & Tourism vocational-technical major in public schools for the first time, starting in Dhofar and Al Dakhiliyah governorates in the 2025-26 academic year.
Dr Maysoon al Shahri, Director-General of Education in Dhofar, said Khawla bint Hakim Basic Education School in Salalah will enrol 50 female students in the programme, while Al Saeediyah School will enrol 50 male students.
“This major aligns with the needs of Oman’s tourism governorates and equips students with practical skills for the travel and hospitality sectors. The rollout begins this year in Al Dakhiliyah and Dhofar, with plans to expand based on results,” she said.
The programme, part of the vocational and technical education track, covers applied subjects such as guest services, tour operations, travel-office management, and destination marketing, preparing graduates for employment in hotels, travel companies, and experience-based attractions across the governorates.
Officials highlighted that the initiative supports Omanis in taking value-added roles in the growing travel and tourism sector, particularly in Dhofar, where seasonal demand and events are expanding.
Al Shahri noted that school selection was based on infrastructure and staffing readiness, with balanced intakes of boys and girls. The first-year evaluation will guide phased expansion to other schools.
By embedding Travel & Tourism in the school curriculum, the ministry aims to strengthen service culture, encourage tourism-linked small enterprises, and enhance students’ practical competencies, supporting Oman’s broader economic diversification goals.
