With the start of the khareef season in Dhofar, a dedicated group of volunteers has stepped up to promote the season and assist visitors free of charge, working closely with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism across key tourist spots in the governorate.
The Salalah Travellers Club, a vibrant community of travel enthusiasts from Dhofar and surrounding areas, goes beyond offering support by organising tourism-related quizzes and photography competitions throughout the khareef season. These activities not only engage tourists, but also showcase the natural beauty of the governorate.
“We see a steady influx of tourists from Muscat, other parts of Oman and the Gulf countries, all eager to experience the monsoon’s charm. We help visitors who face challenges finding directions or local amenities,” shared one volunteer.
The club hosts daily photography contests via three active WhatsApp groups, where over 3,000 members share their passion for travel and exploration. Each day, a winner is chosen from hundreds of stunning photographs submitted by tourists, with prizes sponsored by local supporters. At the season’s end, a grand prize is awarded to the top contributor.
Members like Siraj Zidan, Siddique Babu, Farooq, Shihab Aladi, Usman Saiwan and Anas Pops are passionate weekend explorers who discover and share hidden gems around Dhofar through their social media channels. Visitors are warmly invited to join these excursions to experience the region’s mountains and plains firsthand.
Recognised by local authorities as reliable guides and first responders to travellers in distress, the club’s members possess an extensive knowledge of Dhofar’s uncharted routes. Their experience in trekking and driving has made them invaluable in aiding tourists who get lost or face road mishaps.
Beyond khareef, the Travellers Club extends its social impact by assisting visitors with accommodation and car rentals. Their commitment to community welfare includes organising blood donation drives, football matches, and other social initiatives, fostering a spirit of solidarity among locals and visitors alike.
Fondly dubbed the ‘Google Map of Salalah', these young volunteers continue to deepen their connection with the governorate and enhance the overall tourism experience through their passion and service.
