DAMASCUS: An explosion of unknown origin killed at least four people and injured more than 100 others in a town in northwestern Syria on Thursday, the health ministry said. In a statement carried by official news agency SANA, the ministry said that “four people were killed and 116 others were wounded, in a preliminary toll from the explosion that occurred in the town of Maarat Misrin in the northern Idlib countryside”. Authorities did not immediately say what may have caused the deadly blast. Images showed a huge plume of white smoke over the town, where several children were among the injured. — AFP
