Al Jabal Al Sharqi rises as an eco-tourism hotspot

AL HAMRA: Al Jabal Al Sharqi (The Eastern Mountain) is undergoing a remarkable transformation, positioning it as a major contributor to domestic tourism and local community empowerment.
Shaikh Hilal bin Said al Hajri, Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, affirmed that developing Al Jabal Al Sharqi has been a top priority. The governorate, in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, is focused on creating an integrated tourism environment that meets visitors’ expectations while upholding sustainable environmental standards. This includes improving service efficiency, regulating visitor flow and ensuring safe, balanced access.
Speaking to ONA, he highlighted the ‘Al Jabal Al Sharqi Oasis’ project as one of the most significant initiatives in the governorate. The project tender was floated in April, and bids are currently under review. Covering 10,000 square metres, the development will include prayer halls for men and women, a 300-square-metre investment restaurant, an outdoor theatre, 13 shaded seating areas, pedestrian walkways, open spaces and essential service amenities — all designed to make the site appealing year-round.
He emphasised that this project embodies Oman Vision 2040 through quality initiatives that leverage each wilayat’s unique geographical and environmental features. At the same time, it supports entrepreneurs and SMEs, which are crucial to service delivery and economic opportunities for citizens.
He stated that Al Jabal Al Sharqi is a year-round destination, especially attractive to camping and adventure enthusiasts, and requires robust infrastructure to meet this demand. The development approach centres on involving local communities in implementation and fostering an environment that encourages youth-led initiatives and entrepreneurship in tourism.
Shaikh Sulaiman bin Said al Azri, Wali of Al Hamra, said that the ‘Al Hamra Tourism 2025’ event will begin on August 1 in Al Jabal Al Sharqi and run until August 30. The event offers a rich programme of activities for all age groups, blending entertainment, adventure and culture. Activities will include sunrise-viewing trips, a dedicated camping zone with equipped tents and service facilities, mountain horse rides, hiking trails, 4x4 tours to high-altitude peaks, trail running and cycling. — ONA
