Muscat: In a significant leap for Oman’s pharmaceutical industry, Philex Pharmaceuticals Factory in Salalah has successfully reached its full production capacity, now manufacturing over 100 registered medical products across various therapeutic categories.

This achievement not only reflects the growing capabilities of Oman’s industrial sector but also highlights the country’s strategic progress in strengthening national medicine security and reducing reliance on imported pharmaceuticals.

While the volume of production is impressive, the broader impact lies in the factory’s role in ensuring medicine availability during global disruptions — a lesson reinforced by recent international supply chain challenges.

Community pharmacies across Oman have begun to embrace locally produced medicines as reliable alternatives to imported brands. Najla al Harthy, a pharmacist in Muscat, said: “For a long time, we faced periodic shortages of common medications. With Philex Pharmaceuticals products entering the market, we now have consistent availability. Patients are starting to recognise that local does not mean lower quality — in fact, the response has been very positive”.

Patients have also echoed their satisfaction. Samira al Alawi, said, “My doctor prescribed a Philex medication for high blood pressure. I’ve been using it for six months with excellent results. It’s more affordable than the imported version and I can find it easily in pharmacies”.

Similarly, Badr al Ghassani emphasised convenience: “There’s peace of mind in knowing the medicines I need are made right here. They’re effective and readily available — that’s what matters most”.

The medical community is also embracing the shift as stated by Dr Khalid al Ghailani, a family physician. “Almost half of the medications I prescribe today are made locally. This is a professional decision based on results I see in my clinic,” he said.

Philex Pharmaceuticals products are effective, well-tolerated and more accessible for my patients”. Philex Pharmaceuticals reach now extends beyond Oman’s borders. The company is actively exporting its products to Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Yemen and Libya, with ongoing efforts to enter additional markets in Africa and Asia.

Beyond production, Philex Pharmaceuticals success story contributes to broader national goals, such as job creation, technological advancement and sustainable healthcare development.

With plans to expand production lines to include medications for chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, the future looks promising. The factory is also exploring collaborations with research institutions to develop new formulations and strengthen Oman’s position in regional health innovation.

Philex Pharmaceuticals trajectory showcases what is possible when ambition meets infrastructure, policy and community trust. More than just a factory, it represents Oman’s commitment to self- sufficiency, health sovereignty and industrial excellence.

As local confidence continues to grow and international demand increases, Philex Pharmaceuticals is poised to become a regional pharmaceutical leader — proof that ‘Made in Oman’ can mean trusted and effective.
