MUSCAT: The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) held a heartfelt event on Tuesday in honour of cancer survivors, coinciding with the global month dedicated to survivorship and aligned with the Association's celebrations of its 25th anniversary.
The event began with a welcoming speech by Dr Wahid al Kharousi, Chairperson of OCA, who emphasised the significance of the occasion. 'This month is all about recognising and celebrating the strength of cancer survivors,' Dr Al Kharousi stated.
'While we host this event annually, this year holds special meaning as we commemorate 25 years of OCA's unwavering commitment to cancer awareness, support and advocacy across the Sultanate of Oman,' he added.
Founded in 2000 by Yuthar al Rawahi, OCA has been a beacon of hope for thousands of patients and their families. The organisation has continuously strived to support those affected by cancer through awareness campaigns, early detection programmes and psychosocial services.
In a special video message, Yuthar underscored the importance of cancer survivors and the resilience they embody. She praised the survivors' strength and emphasised their role in inspiring hope and courage within the community. She also affirmed that cancer treatment depends on counseling and supporting the patient, ensuring them they will survive the disease, while focusing on psychosocial services.
Later, several personal testimonies from cancer survivors were shared with all attendees as they recounted their journeys of strength, hope and healing. Dr Rawan al Mujaini, Clinical Psychologist at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre, delivered an insightful presentation on the critical role of psychological support in the healing process of cancer patients.
