LARGEST EARTHEN MONUMENT

People use mud to re-plaster the Great Mosque of Djenne in Djenne. Thousands of Malians converged before dawn on the iconic mosque of Djenne, a World Heritage-listed historic town in central Mali, for the annual plastering of this earthen architectural gem. First built in the 13th century before being destroyed, the mosque was completely rebuilt in 1907 and is the largest earthen monument in the world, according to Unesco. — AFP
