MUSCAT: The Oman Rugby Committee continues their efforts to develop rugby game and attract emerging talents from various governorates. Assistant coach of the national team, Mohammed al Hashami, one of the key figures behind the rugby development project revealed a pioneering initiative to establish two training centers for young players. Al Hashami confirmed that these centers represent a qualitative leap in the local development of the sport. Al Hashami explained that 'The two centers were launched in the Wilayat of Bausher in Muscat Governorate and the Wilayat of Dima W'attayeen in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, under the supervision of assistant coach Ali al Dhakhri'.
“This is the first time we’ve established rugby training centers in Oman exclusively for Omani students, 100 per cent. Led by Omani coaches who have been trained and qualified specifically for this mission,' Al Hashami said.
fieldwork begin with a detailed plan, collaborating with several schools to scout talent. Four schools from Muscat and another four from Al Sharqiyah North participated. A total of 299 students underwent trials and both physical and technical assessments. From these, 100 students were selected, divided into two age groups 9 to 13 years and 13 to 16 years based on their promising abilities in basic rugby skills such as running, passing, teamwork, and physical endurance. Currently, about 60 students continue the training, split between the two centers. Each center holds two sessions per week in the afternoons after school hours, reflecting the players' and their families’ strong commitment to this new sporting experience. Al Hashami pointed out that the training programme is not limited to technical skills. It also includes educational components on the rules of the game, principles of sports nutrition, and the importance of discipline and teamwork.
For the next phase, Al Hashami announced that, the programme is preparing for its first joint event, which will bring together players from both centers at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (Bausher Centre) on June 27. The event will be held under auspices of Jaber bin Mohammed al Shuaibi, Director of the National Teams Affairs Department. Several friendly matches will be organised during the event, serving as a practical test of the progress made over the past six weeks of training.
'These matches will be a great opportunity to evaluate the players’ technical levels in a real competitive atmosphere and give coaches the chance to identify areas that need improvement before moving on to more advanced stages of the programme.' Al Hashami ended.
