Al Dakhiliyah Governorate races ahead with innovative projects

NIZWA: Al Dakhiliyah Governorate is fast-tracking its development agenda through strategic investments in infrastructure, tourism, innovation and agriculture with a new path towards inclusive and sustainable growth.

Shaikh Hilal bin Said al Hajri, Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, announced that 68 projects worth over RO 44.7 million are in implementation across the governorate. An additional 10 projects worth RO 5.2 million are also being awarded under a development strategy aimed at modernising infrastructure and elevating services for citizens.

As part of the Governorates Development Programme, Al Dakhiliyah has already received 40 projects totalling RO 16.3 million. From 2022 to 2025, 70 per cent of the allocated budget — amounting to RO 12.68 million — has already been disbursed. Al Hajri stressed that projects are prioritised based on readiness, impact and their ability to create lasting local value.

A standout performer in Oman’s knowledge economy, Al Dakhiliyah benefits from strong educational institutions, a network of cultural centres and a thriving youth population. The number of SMEs in the governorate has surged past 14,200, supported by RO 8 million in grants between December 2024 and February 2025. Local content achievements climbed to 20.5 per cent in Q1 2025 — 7.5 per cent higher than the target.



The governorate’s commitment to youth empowerment is further reflected in initiatives like a dedicated award to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth. Four specialised centres have also been set up to boost startups and skills training.

On the infrastructure front, road projects spanning 203 km are underway with a budget of over RO 16.2 million. Between 2022 and 2024, 245.5 km of roads were developed at a cost of RO 19.6 million, including 33 km specifically for industrial zones.

Investment activity in the governorate has soared, with the number of projects increasing from just 8 in 2022 to 53 in 2025 — a remarkable 562.5 per cent jump. These projects aim to enrich services, diversify the economy and boost job creation and tourism.

In tourism, projects like the redevelopment of Misfat Al Abriyeen, now 40 per cent complete and the revitalisation of the historic Al Aqr neighbourhood are key to transforming heritage into economic opportunity. The former drew over 115,000 visitors in 2024 alone.

Al Dakhiliyah’s natural landscapes have made it a prime destination for adventure tourism, with activities like mountain climbing, paragliding and cave exploration gaining traction. These offerings, backed by infrastructure and events like the “Green Mountain Summer” and “Rose Season” festivals, continue to draw thousands of visitors while bolstering local SMEs.

The “Mountain Spring” Festival in 2025 alone saw a 50 per cent rise in footfall to over 80,000 visitors, benefitting 30 entrepreneurs. In total, cultural and seasonal festivals like “Soka” and “Samail” have greatly enhanced local engagement and economic activity.

Agricultural tourism is another cornerstone, with the governorate cultivating crops like pomegranates, roses and olives in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and Jabal Shams. These efforts are not only vital for food security but also present an immersive tourism experience showcasing Omani rural life and sustainable farming.
