Oman-Iran relations built on solid foundations

Omani-Iranian relations are based on solid foundations of good neighbourliness and non-interference in internal affairs. This stance has contributed to resolving contemporary regional issues

The visit of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian to Oman today is expected to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries. This visit is a significant step in consolidating the long-standing friendship between Oman and Iran, with a focus on enhancing cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.

The visits by high-ranking officials, including His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's visit to Tehran in May 2023, paved the way for increased cooperation between the two nations. Oman and Iran have enjoyed good relations for decades, with Oman recently playing a crucial role as a mediator in the indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the US.

Omani-Iranian relations are a unique aspect of regional diplomacy, driven by historical, geographical and cultural factors. Oman's role as a mediator and facilitator has been crucial in maintaining regional stability and promoting dialogue between Iran and other nations. As the region continues to evolve, Oman's relations with Iran will remain an important factor in shaping the future of the Middle East.

It is noted that Omani-Iranian relations are based on solid foundations of good neighbourliness and non-interference in internal affairs. This stance has contributed to resolving contemporary regional issues. Omani diplomacy has always provided grounds for rapprochement and understanding about issues between Iran and other countries. Additionally, the Sultanate of Oman has contributed to the release of citizens of different countries held in Iran on security concerns.

Both countries have a unique relationship, and Oman has maintained a cordial and cooperative stance with Iran. This distinct approach is rooted in historical, geographical and cultural factors. Also, as Oman shares the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, a critical waterway for global oil and gas transport, this geographical proximity has fostered cooperation and diplomacy between the two countries.

President Dr Pezeshkian's visit is anticipated to boost economic ties and strengthen strategic agreements between Oman and Iran. The visit is also expected to focus on regional stability and security issues, likely discussing ways to reinforce security, stability and peace across the region.

Economic ties between Oman and Iran are significant. The two countries have established a naval shipping line between the Iranian port Bandar Abbas and Oman's Sohar Port, enhancing trade. Iran considers Oman a vital gateway to Asian and East African markets, and the two countries have signed agreements to sell Iranian natural gas to Oman.

Over the past 50 years, the two countries have shared deep-rooted historical relations that have been further strengthened through cooperation. The two countries are actively seeking to maximise ties, particularly in economic diversification and investment opportunities.

The relations between Oman and Iran are based on solid foundations and guided by the principles of good neighbourly relations. They do not interfere in each other's internal matters. When common interests are involved, the two countries coordinate to achieve the best outcomes.

Both countries are strategically located on the Strait of Hormuz, which is a gateway to the world. Safety and security are the priorities of the two countries. They keep their communication links always open and never shut their windows.

Oman has developed its ties with Iran based on the principles of good neighbourly relations and mutual respect for each other's internal situations. Oman can never depart from its known political line, which it has continuously followed since the beginning of the Renaissance.

It is hoped that the visit will further pave the way for increased economic, commercial, scientific and medical cooperation between the two nations. Iran does not view Oman solely as an economic market, but as a strategic and vital partner.
