2 new dams worth RO 47m to be inaugurated today

SALALAH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources will open the two new dams of Wadi Annar and Wadi Adawnib in Salalah in Dhofar Governorate.

Constructed at a cost of RO 47 million, the two dams are part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to boost flood protection.

The Ministry will inaugurate the Wadi Annar Dam in Salalah, today (Sunday). The dam represents part of the Dhofar Governorate’s flood protection system. It has a storage capacity of approximately 16 million cubic metres with a total cost of approximately RO 23 million.

The Wadi Adawnib dam, the largest dam in Salalah’s flood protection system and the second largest dam in the country with a storage capacity of 83 million cubic metres and a total cost of approximately RO 24 million, will be inaugurated on Monday.

By constructing two new dams, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources aims to address the growing climate challenges facing the Sultanate of Oman and reduce the risk of flooding in Wadi Annar and Wadi Adawnib. It also aims to enhance water security and capture heavy rainwater and floodwater descending from the mountains towards the Port of Salalah, Raysut Industrial City and the Salalah Free Zone.

The protection system in the Wilayat of Salalah in Dhofar Governorate is constructed with the aim of supporting sustainable development efforts and providing protection against flood risks. It also contributes to reducing sediment at the Port of Salalah. — ONA
