Expats can start business in Oman, conditions apply

Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP), during its annual media briefing, said foreign investors, including expatriates, can apply for a commercial register for starting a business, but under certain conditions.

The conditions include the mandatory employment of at least one Omani citizen after one year from the company’s establishment, while domestic workers and those in similar categories of jobs can't open a commercial register.

Expatriates bound by employment contracts with government or private entities can establish a company subject to the Foreign Capital Investment Law with the approval, or if the employment contract is terminated, or a transfer pledge is made.

Unskilled workers in private sector establishments are prohibited from applying to open a commercial register, while it is necessary to submit a project feasibility study from one of the offices accredited by the Development Bank.
