SUHAR: The historic Sohar Fort in Al Batinah North Governorate welcomed more than 1,172 visitors during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, attracting both citizens and residents keen to explore its rich heritage.

Sultan bin Ali al Muqbali, Director of the Sohar Fort Museum, noted that visitors had the opportunity to delve into the fort’s storied past and architectural significance. “Sohar Fort remains one of the most important forts in Al Batinah North Governorate due to its strategic location and the pivotal role it has played over the centuries,” he said.

The construction of the fort dates back to the late 13th and early 14th centuries AD. Today, it houses a museum that showcases the archaeological and historical heritage of Suhar. The museum also highlights the city’s prominence in the copper trade and its historical connections with the Chinese port of Canton.

Visitors were able to view a variety of artefacts discovered through archaeological excavations both within the fort and at other key sites around Oman.

In addition to the fort’s appeal, Al Batinah North Governorate hosted a range of activities during the Eid holiday organised by Al Batinah North Municipality. These included competitions for children and adults, horse riding, theatrical shows, cartoon character appearances and talent showcases – drawing diverse segments of the community into the celebrations. - ONA
