BAHLA, MARCH 23
Every Friday during the holy month of Ramadhan, Harat Al Ghafat in Bahla comes alive with vibrant cultural and community events, blending heritage with celebration. This historic neighbourhood, over 150 years old, was abandoned for five decades, but thanks to the dedicated efforts of Al Kour Charity Caravan, part of the Al Kour Sports Team in Al Ghafat, it has been beautifully restored and brought back to life.
Ahmed bin Abdullah al Hinai, a resident of Al Ghafat, reflected on this remarkable transformation: 'Al Ghafat was once home to our ancestors, where they built markets and homes. However, it remained deserted for decades. Today, thanks to the remarkable efforts of Al Kour Charity Caravan, the neighbourhood has been revived through renovation, lighting and cleaning, restoring its former beauty and charm.'
The restoration efforts began with street lighting installations, followed by renovation of the eastern mosque and the revitalisation of the main square into a hub for celebrations and community gatherings. Now, for the third consecutive year, Al Ghafat hosts weekly Ramadhan events, drawing visitors from across the governorate.
Last Friday, the neighbourhood witnessed the 'Children’s Tahloola' event, where over 500 children, dressed in traditional attire, joyfully walked through the alleys, chanting Ramadhan prayers and supplications. The heartwarming scene revived Oman’s cherished customs and traditions.
The evening continued with a community Iftar in the old neighbourhood, held under the auspices of Dr Hamad bin Salem al Rawahi, Member of the State Council. The celebrations also featured a children’s theatre, charity market, candy distribution, fireworks displays and a photography exhibition showcasing Al Ghafat’s rich history.
Through the tireless dedication of Al Kour Charity Caravan, Al Ghafat has been transformed — not just physically, but socially — fostering a renewed sense of unity and cultural appreciation. Their efforts stand as a testament to the power of collective commitment in reviving and celebrating Oman’s heritage.
