OBA General Assembly held its 1st meeting

MUSCAT: The General Assembly of the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) held its first meeting at City Seasons Hotel, chaired by Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi, Chairman of Oman Basketball Association (OBA), with the presence of board members and representatives from 21 clubs: Al Nasr, Ahli Sidab, Bausher, Sohar, Saham, Salalah, Dhofar, Oman Club, Qurayat, Mirbat, Masirah, Nizwa, Al Ittihad, Al Bashayer, Al Salam, Al Suwaiq, Seeb, Al Shabab, Al Amerat and Al Orouba.
The meeting discussed and approved the general budget for 2025, reviewed amendments to the statutes and examined various activities.
Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi opened the meeting with a speech praising the continuous cooperation between the General Assembly and the Association in supporting activities and developing local competitions. He also congratulated the clubs that secured top positions in the general league and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Shield.
Regarding efforts to market the Association’s activities, Al Naabi stated that the Association is working on attracting sponsoring companies to organise new tournaments. He indicated that negotiations with several companies have reached final stages, with positive signs of signing multiple agreements soon.
He affirmed that women’s basketball is witnessing continuous growth, citing the U16 girls' national team’s third-place finish in the Gulf 3x3 Basketball Championship. He also referred to ongoing projects with the International Federation for Women's Sports and the Olympic Solidarity Committee aimed at promoting and developing basketball in the Sultanate of Oman.
Regarding upcoming events, Al Naabi revealed that the OBA will host the Arab Youth 3x3 Basketball Championship in September in Dhofar, followed by the Gulf Men's National Teams Championship in November at Al Mouj Muscat. He urged clubs and fans to support these events and attend the matches.
Representatives from Qurayat, Seeb and Oman Club were appointed to review the minutes of the previous meeting, which were subsequently discussed and approved. The assembly also ratified the technical report, which included national team participation, international referee activities, women’s basketball competitions and sports development programmes.
Additionally, the General Assembly approved the financial report for the fiscal year ending on December 31, 2024, and sanctioned the general budget for 2025. The board was granted the authority to select an external auditor and determine their compensation by negotiating with specialised firms to secure the best rates.
The General Assembly also approved amendments to the Association’s statutes, including modifications to Article (14) regarding membership application procedures and the removal of Clause Four from Item (38) concerning the membership of an Omani holding a position on the board of the International Federation.
Regarding Seeb Club’s proposal to increase financial rewards for clubs participating in local and international tournaments, Al Naabi clarified that the Association is committed to supporting clubs. However, two-thirds of the budget is allocated to salaries, limiting the possibility of increasing rewards at present. He stated that the Association has addressed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth on this matter and is awaiting a response. Meanwhile, the board continues to seek sponsors and partners to enhance financial resources for tournaments.
